We were recently asked to create a stub-manifold to enable motorbike throttlebodies to be fitted to an engine.
Fitting motorbike throttlebodies is a common way of liberating more power from performance engines. Most car engines work through a single throttlebody, on a common intake for all cylinders. This is simple and delivers a perfectly serviceable engine for day to day use. By fitting a set of lightweight bike throttlebodies, which have a throttlebody per cylinder it's possible to get air into the engine easier and faster, getting more power at the top of the rev-range. This is excellent news for people with a track car, who often rev their engines very hard. However, with more air able to get into the engine from idle it should run more efficiently throughout the rev range.

This project was part of fitting a Rover K-Series engine into a 1978 MG Midget. For anyone who's not heard of this conversion, even a relatively basic K-Series engine will make the lightweight little MG really fly. The unit chosen for this particular install was a 1.6 motor. This is rated at around 120bhp, but the throttlebodies should liberate another 10-20bhp at least. To run these bodies Megasquirt engine management has been chosen. With our TIG welding facilities this job was an absolute pleasure.
For this particular installation a set of Honda CBR600 throttlebodies had been chosen. Because the port spacing on the K-Series motor is different to the width of the bodies, we had to shape the pipes from the head to the bodies.
To create a really neat finish the welds were made out of sight and we've included the water outlet at the end of the head, for ease of plumbing the install.
