Anyone who's used a Syncro off road will know about the risk to your CV boots from rocks, branches and just about anything that can poke up from the trails you're driving on.  The outer CVs are at the greatest risk and they're the toughest to get hold of.  A simple protective sheet in front of the joint protects the boot, avoiding unnecessary damage and expense.

They're just like the VW item, only half the price and they use thicker steel, which is powder-coated to create a top quality, durable finish - they'll probably outlast your van.
